The moon phases are a new found interest of mine and the more I learn about them the more I fall in love with their magic and beauty. A new moon occurs when the sun and the moon are together in the sky, meaning their gravitational pull is working from the same sides of the earth. This sun moon conjunction sparks an intense energy, and when we work to align with this energy we can begin to build the life we dream of.
The moon affects our energetic bodies just as much as she affects the oceans tides, making this monthly love affair between the moon and the sun a perfect time to tune inward, explore our consciousness and set the seeds of powerful intentions.
Creating a New Moon ritual is the most powerful way to to harness the magic of the new moon, signifying a pause in your life so that you can tune in, create intentions and connect your heart and the universe on a regular basis, helping us manifest true abundance! Here’s how to get started:
1. Setting up a Ritual Space.
Prepare your ritual space in advance. I perform mine at my alter where I practice. It holds a few crystals, incense, pictures and my mala when I’m not wearing it. It’s imprtant that you feel at peace in your space, this is a time to tune in and find some stillness, if your space doesn’t feel comfortable odds are you won’t be able to relax.
According to Spirit Daughter’s New Moon Workbook, incorporating all the elements can help create a sacred ritual space as well; Air, Water, Earth and Fire. This can be done in a number of ways; such as creating a pleasing aroma, burning candles, incense and sage and even incorporating crystals into the ritual, all combined to create a sweet harmonious vibe to help you connect to yourself.
2. Prepare the Mind.
It is important that we’re in the correct head space when beginning our ritual, odds are if we cannot quiet our monkey mind we will find difficulty connecting to ourselves and what we truly align with. Using Yoga and Pranayama can help release any tension the body may be holding onto and help you set intentions from a more grounded and centered space.
Begin by flowing through your favorite yoga sequence or some gentle Moon Salutations. While you flow, do your best to connect breath to movement, our goal is to make our practice a moving mediation.
Next, take any comfortable seated position and place one palm on your belly, one palm on your chest. Take 3 deep inhales through the nose allowing your belly to fill and press against your hand with the inhale, open your mouth and sigh it out loudly. Seal the lips and continue to lengthen the breathing, inhaling to a count of 4, pausing and exhale to match. With every inhale imagine yourself inhaling love and light, and with every exhale release anything that isn’t serving you. Continue to breath in the fashion until you feel grounded and at peace.
3. Write Your Intentions.
Before you begin, take a moment to affirm to the universe that your are open to receive its gifts. I do this by first writing the words “I am open to receive the all the universe has to offer”.
This is the time for you to create and envision your most abundant life. Get greedy and get specific, clarity is important for manifesting our intentions. After all, the universe is conspiring to give us everything we’ve ever wanted, all we have to do is ask. Write 5-10 intentions in affirmative language, we are not wishful thinking here, we are creating abundance. Focus on the things that make you beam.
4. Detach from the Outcomes.
Attatchment it the root of all suffering and is based off of fear and insecurities, where as detachment is based off of the power of your true self... what will be will be. Don’t worry so much about the “how” and let the universe do it’s thing. The outcomes that you so strongly desire for yourself may not be as good for you as what the universe has in store for you naturally.
5. Close Out the Ritual
Once you've set your intentions, take a moment for gratitude, gratitude for your self for carving out space to tune in and connect, and gratitude for the universe and the beautiful energy that it provides. Say a simple prayer to close the ritual, I repeat a Sanskrit chant meaning "May all being of this earth be happy and free" three times followed by an OM and three Shanti's (I've posted the chant below for self indulgence). Put your intentions away, come back to them at the full moon if possible to check in and revise if needed.
Wishing you all a gorgeous new moon filled of magic and love.
